5 spring tasks that every homeowner should accomplish this season

It’s finally almost here! Spring’s a big deal in the real estate world, but this blog isn’t about that. Most of us have our reasons to love winter, but it’s time for a little refreshment and renewal.

That’s why this piece is full of tips all homeowners should know when it comes to spring maintenance and more, whether you’re planning to put your house on the market, or not.

(If you’re gearing up to sell, this list becomes extra important!)

As winter recedes and the vibrant hues of spring emerge, it’s the perfect time to rejuvenate your home. Regular maintenance enhances your property’s appeal and prevents costly repairs down the line. Here’s a comprehensive spring home maintenance checklist to guide you through essential tasks:

1. Clean gutters and downspouts. Winter storms can fill gutters with debris, leading to blockages that may cause water damage. Ensure gutters and downspouts are clear to facilitate proper drainage away from your home’s foundation. Regular maintenance can prevent issues like mold growth and structural damage. While you’re up on a ladder, examine the roof and look for signs of damage, such as missing or damaged shingles and leaks.

2. Check windows and doors. Now that warmer weather is here, it will be a bit more comfortable to do the next task on this list. It’s important to inspect seals around windows and doors for any gaps or damage. Why? Proper sealing prevents drafts, improves energy efficiency and keeps pests at bay. Recaulking or weatherstripping as needed can make a significant difference in maintaining indoor comfort. Speaking of energy efficiency, make sure you schedule your HVAC service appointment and replace those air filters on a regular basis.

3. Prepare the lawn and garden. We all know spring is the ideal time to rejuvenate your outdoor spaces. Clean up any debris, prune overgrown shrubs, and consider planting new flowers or shrubs to enhance your landscape. Regular lawn maintenance not only boosts curb appeal but also promotes a healthy outdoor environment. It’s also a great time to make sure your lawn mower and other equipment are in good working order. Regardless of how you feel about it, mowing season is quickly approaching, and you don’t want any surprises.

4. Don’t forget about your outdoor furniture. One of the best things about warmer weather and longer days is the opportunity to spend an extended amount of time outside, but don’t forget these fixtures may need your attention due to months of exposure to the elements. Check for signs of mold or mildew. Addressing these issues ensures your furniture remains in good condition for the season ahead – and for future years, too.

5. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. A good rule of thumb is to always do this when you spring your clocks forward. Even though DST has already started, if you haven’t tested your smoke alarms and other safety devices, do it now. After all, not all of us need to manually update our clocks ahead these days. Regular testing provides peace of mind and ensures your home is prepared in case of emergencies.
