4 red flags all house hunters should know
There’s nothing quite like finding the house that feels like “the one.” But it’s more important than ever to make sure your potential home doesn’t come with hidden surprises. Now that more inventory is coming on the market and many potential buyers are still on the sidelines, those who are in the game should be doing more due diligence than ever.
While a place might check all the boxes on the surface, certain warning signs could mean expensive repairs or bigger headaches down the road. Whether you’re buying for the first time or the fourth, here are four common red flags to watch out for.
Foundation worries. A solid foundation is just that—foundational. Cracks in the walls, sloping floors or sticking doors and windows may be signs of structural movement. Some settling is normal in most homes, but anything beyond that can signal costly problems. It’s smart to ask what work has been done and have a licensed home inspector take a closer look.
Water damage or other cosmetic cover-ups. Water damage can quietly cause serious issues in a home, and sometimes owners try to disguise it instead of addressing the root problem. Look for telltale signs like:
- Stains on ceilings or walls
- Bubbling paint
- Musty odors
- Warped flooring
- Isolated “upgrades” like a new tile in just one section of a bathroom or a single freshly painted wall.
Sure, sometimes quick fixes are all that are needed, but too many of them could be a sign of numerous hidden problems or a poorly executed renovation job. When something looks out of place, it’s worth asking why.
Outdated electrical systems. Considering an older property? Pay particular attention to this red flag. Flickering lights, warm outlets or a lack of three-prong plugs may mean the electrical system needs updating. Not only can outdated wiring be a safety risk, but it can also be costly to fix. If you’re unsure, an inspector can let you know whether the panel and wiring are up to code.
Bad neighbors or an unsavory area. Location matters just as much as the house itself. Before making an offer, spend time in the neighborhood at different times of day. Do those around you take pride in their homes, too? What are the schools like? Is the area walkable, safe and a fit for your lifestyle? A great house won’t feel like home if the surrounding area doesn’t meet your needs. After all, good neighbors are worth their weight in gold.
