3 dog-related things to know when it comes to selling
This week, we want to revisit one of our favorite blog topics – pets! For years now, people have been talking about how these beloved animals play a large role in home decisions.
Sure, dogs have always been man’s best friend, but there are now more American households with pets than human children, and, yes, these fur babies are often treated like part of the family in many aspects of life – including house hunting. You’ve probably heard of barkitecture when it comes to home design, but here are some other items to consider if you’re ready to take a pet-friendly home to market.
Know what amenities buyers with pets want. Since more than 70% of households own a pet these days, it’s key to know what this demographic is looking for when it comes to their next home. Of course, it varies, but fenced-in yards, hardwood floors (since they’re easy to clean), extra storage space and dedicated areas inside for feeding or relaxation top the list. Dog owners want their neighborhood to be friendly, too. It’s not just home features that animal lovers care about when looking for their next place. They want the community around them to be good for their four-legged friends, too. In fact, more than 15% of homebuyers in 2024 said they weighed positives for their pets when choosing their next neighborhood, according to a survey from our friends at the National Association of REALTORS®. That means if your community has a dog park, a good veterinarian or dog-related businesses nearby, your agent should have that information ready as part of the potential pitch to interested buyers.
Buyers still don’t want to see signs of your dog. House hunting may have gone to the dogs, but that doesn’t mean prospective buyers want to see your dog – or signs of yours – in their potential new home. Soon-to-be sellers still should repair signs of pet damage, and do a deep clean before listing, and pets should never be home at the time of a showing, if possible.
Our team appreciates all our customers and partners. Whether you share this widespread affinity for pets or not, we want to thank you for being such loyal friends.
